Unlocking Disney’s Contemporary Resort
On this episode of Unlocking the Magic, we unlock THE MOST ICONIC Walt Disney World Resort, Disney’s Contemporary. Opened to guest in 1971, we share the Contemporary’s wonderful history including some fun trivia questions and what you can expect when visiting today.
Walt Disney World was undoubtedly the first destination resort in America and the Contemporary was the unique hotels of its time. Part of the original resorts, which were created based on Walt’s vision to provide hotels alongside the attractions to really give you an immersive experience and once completed, it was considered a Florida Icon. The resort continues to stay true to its original vision of mid-century modern or retro-futuristic which somehow remains timeless.
Marty Sklar’s description of the resort :
“The Contemporary is very special because that term contemporary meant that we were trying to do something that represented a step into the future. We made a deal with US Steel to actually build those hotel rooms offsite and put all the amenities into it the beds the wallpaper everything was put in those rooms off-site then trucked to WDW lifted into place and slid into the Contemporary- Like putting a chest of drawers into the framework. But the problem they had was actually moving the rooms on the Florida highways””
There’s even a vintage video of US Steel Corporation promotional commercial describing their involvement with the project and why you should make this your next vacation.
