Sci-Fi Dine in Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
In this episode of Unlocking The Magic, we head backstage to unlock one of Disney’s best-themed restaurants, Sci-Fi Dine- In Theater restaurant.
Now in Production!
The Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater premiered at Disney’s Hollywood studios on April 20, 1991, as a unique “indoor” dining experience that’s themed after a night at an old 1950’s drive-in, with 50’s style cars, car hops, a movie screen, and a gorgeous star-filled night sky.
As you arrive to the restaurant, you are greeted by a classic car hop that takes you to your “automo-booth” or picnic-style table. The theming is so spot on there is even a concession stand in the back just like there would be at any old drive-in. Scary/ silly clips are shared on screen which sets you back right to the space age of hollywood.
Food is mostly burgers and fries but we find that comfort food certainly does the trick after a long day.
Interesting facts:
- The sign outside at the Sci-Fi represents “Googie architecture,” a type of futurist architecture influenced by the Space Age and the Atomic Age.
- The license plate letters and numbers are inspired by the Imagineer’s initials and birthdates, which played a role in the design.
