Unlocking Space Mountain
Walt Disney’s Matterhorn bobsleds was the first in its kind- a tubular coaster- and was ultimately such a success that Walt knew he could bring another thrilling attraction to Disneyland..
During the early 1906’s with the Fascination of space travel, the idea of blending a thrilling coaster with space seemed to be the perfect fit for Disneyland.
The concept was an expensive one and with the lack of technology at the time, it would not be easy to figure out a way for it to come to fruition.Walts ideas were so grand- the tools needed to create we’re just not available at the time.
After Walt’s death the project formally went on hold indefinitely..
With that said- many people confuse or assume Space Mountain originated in Disneyland ..the answer is no but sort of..
SEE in true Disney fashion, nothing is ever fully scrapped- just put on the backburner.. Walt’s original idea for the space coaster was revived and Imagineers decided it would be the perfect fit for Magic Kingdom
